Initially the airline was jointly owned with the Faroese Government commanding a majority stake of 51% and Danish airline Cimber Air holding the remaining 49%. Later, in 1989, the government bought out Cimber Air's stake and assumed full control over Atlantic Airways. The airline's first official passenger flight was on March 28, 1988 between Vágar and Copenhagen.
The airline's fleet is made up of both standard aeroplanes and helicopter craft with the former represented largely by BAe models of various descriptions and the latter by a number of variations of the Bell Textron craft.The airline serves a small number of European destinations covering Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Greenland. Flights operate between the Faroe Islands and Aalborg, Aberdeen, Billund, Copenhagen, London, Narsarsuaq, Oslo, Reykjavik and Stavanger. Helicopter flights, meanwhile, provide domestic services to and from Vágar, Mykines, Klaksvík, Koltur, Tórshavn, Skúvoy and Dímun.
On all international flights, passengers are offered a high standard of service and treatment from cabin crew members, who aim to make safety and comfort their priority at all times. Food and drink are provided on a complimentary basis in both economy and business/first class cabins. Bookings can be made on the Atlantic Airlines website with secure credit card payment facilities offered as well as the tools with which to manage aspects of flights such as rescheduling. E-bookings are ticket-free transactions and customers need only their personal booking number and passport in order to check in at the airport. Additionally, it's possible to make bookings via a company call centre or at participating travel agents.
