AirTran Airways

Located in Atlanta, Georgia, AirTran Airways is one of America's favourite and largest low cost airlines, flying thousands of people on hundreds of flights to dozens of destinations daily. AirTran also has the distinction of being one of America’s fastest growing airlines and is the world’s largest operator of the Boeing 717 aircraft. AirTran Airways’ history stretches back to the early 1990s, when it operated just two former Delta Air Lines' DC-9 aircraft and was then known as ValuJet Airlines.

The airline's base is at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the Georgia capital. Today the company has dozens of jets with many more 737-700s on order and a staff complement of around 9,000. AirTran Airways fly all over the United States, from Seattle, Washington in the northwest to Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas in the southeast, and 50 other destinations in between. Among these are major destinations such as Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tampa and Washington DC.

In flight entertainment is rather limited, however, with a multi-channel radio where headsets must be purchased for US$2.00, but adequate for short haul flights. Snacks, coffee, juice, and soda drinks are complimentary on all flights, while beer, wine and cocktails are US$5.00 each, payable by credit or debit card. Reservations can be made through a travel agent, online, or by calling AirTran Airways on 1 800 AIR TRAN (tel: +1 800 247 8726) for an additional fee of US$5.00. By far the easiest way to book is online using the easy reservations system. Passengers can check in online up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. In addition, passengers can also check in through self-service kiosks at all airports, with the exception of Grand Bahama Island.
