The airline originally started out as an air-taxi service and flying school under the name Aliadriatica in Pescara in 1983 and later went on to provide scheduled services in the region. It wasn't until 1994, however, that Air One purchased their first Boeing 737-200 and began offering both scheduled and charter flights. The following year the airline changed its name to Air One and expanded rapidly after routing between Rome and Milan.

The airline really took off after partnering with Lufthansa in 2000, offering more flights in the region as well as international connections, and by 2003 they were flying five million passengers per year. By 2006, Air One launched Air One CityLiner, a subsidiary serving regional destinations.

Major domestic destinations served include Bologna, Cagliari, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Pisa, Rome, Trieste, Turin and Venice; while current international scheduled destinations include Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, London and Paris. London City Airport is used on the Milan-London route and has the advantage of being a lot closer to the centre of London than the other airports. Air One also plans to launch long-haul services and to greatly expand its fleet by 2012.

The airline operates an economy class across the board, meaning everyone is treated equal. In flight service is good, with complimentary national and international newspapers, drinks and snacks. Those on the evening Rome-Milan and Rome-Turin routes will be offered a complimentary glass of wine.
