The airline evolved out of the postal and passenger carrier Aeroposta, which was established in 1929, and the airlines LASO and LANE, which were established in the following year. It was in fact May 1949 when these three airlines merged to become a single company under the title Aerolíneas Argentinas. Operations of the newly merged company began on December 7, 1950.
Aerolíneas Argentinas has a fleet comprised of some 58 aircraft of which the larger proportion is Boeings, with nineteen 737-200s, eleven Boeing 737-500s and three Boeing 747-400s. The remaining craft are Airbus of varying models and MD-80s. The airline has an order pending for ten Airbus A330-200s with delivery expected by 2008.
Flights with Aerolíneas Argentinas always include complimentary food and drink, irrespective of the cabin class. Full meals or snacks are served depending on the flight duration and a bar service provides passengers with a range of soft and alcoholic beverage options. Coffee and tea are also served alongside food. Passengers with special dietary requirements can be catered for provided they give the airline sufficient notice.
In-flight entertainment is available on a large number of the airline's aircraft with overhead television sets screening a variety of movies, documentaries and sporting events. All seats are equipped with audio facilities offering a varied selection of music as well as comedy material.
